Askemilygrace's Blog

Sorry for the long delay inbetween posts!  My computer crashed and I had to wait until I could get a new one.

A friend asked me to come up with trendy ideas for maternity outfits, so I thought I’d do a little better and come up with an entire wardrobe for $500. It wasn’t until I purged myself of 3/4 my Maternity Wardrobe that I realized that I’ll probably need them again someday.  If you’re planning on having multiple children, it’s a good idea to invest in some classic pieces for a Maternity wardrobe.  So I’ve been hunting down classic pieces that will last through the seasons and will most likely still be in style 10 years down the road.

A crisp white button up blouse has been in style for decades and I don’t see it as going out of style any time soon! It can be worn for work or with cami and shorts for a more casual look. I found this one at the Gap for $44.

Everyone needs a good pair of jeans! I personally couldn’t survive without them! It’s one item that you should never skimp on and that I consider to be a “major” purchase.  Granted, I have found great inexpensive pairs that fit me wonderfully, but I’ve found that the pricier option put up with way more abuse. Here’s a pair I found on shopbop for $180.

One essential item for any wardrobe is a little black dress.  You can wear one for date night or glam it up with accessories for a black tie event. I’m a fan of the wrap dress because it flatters almost any silhouette.

I found this one at the Gap for $59.

A simple blazer can be worn for work or over a graphic tee for a rock-n-roll look.

I found this one at Motherhood Maternity for $35.

A good tee will take you far!  I like ones that can be worn under blazers, with skirts, jeans, or even under dresses! My favorites can be found at Downeast Basics.  They’re not specifically maternity but the one I bought before I got pregnant was wearable and covered my belly throughout pregnancy! They’re durable too so I bought 8 of them!

The Wonder tee is $11

A good pair of trousers is essential for a working soon-to-be mother. This pair from Old Navy is comfy and inexpensive at only $29!

A wardrobe isn’t complete without a nice fuzzy cardigan! Here is one I found at Topshop for $76.  It’s perfect for fall or early spring!

There you have it,  a classic wardrobe for the mother to be for under $500!  All you need are some accessories, jewelry, and shoes to make these classic wear-all pieces your very own style!

{January 4, 2011}   Daily Buy Jan. 3, 2011

Sometimes I ask myself, if I could buy only one thing, what would it be?

Today I’ve chosen these trousers by Urban Outfitters.

I love the silhouette of these trousers!  They have a very 70’s vibe to them, and I picture them with a flowy white cotton top, white, wide-brimmed floppy hat, and brown sandals.  Very chic!

{January 3, 2011}   Casual day-to-day outfit

Hello everyone!  This is Laura, she has gorgeous curves and would like suggestions on different ways to flaunt them.  She didn’t exactly say that, but she should totally rock what she’s been blessed with!  She had a budget, but I’m sure her boyfriend won’t mind if I go a bit over.  (i.e. Completely disregard the budget!)

A tailored blazer like this will make the waist appear narrower while accentuating feminine curves.

A floral blouse gathered at the bottom of the ribcage flatters most silhouettes and the colors in this will blouse really flatter her skin tone.  (I’ve seen color pictures to be able to make this assessment!  Don’t worry!)

Bootcut jeans will elongate her legs and make her appear taller as the outer seam should go in a straight line from the thigh to the floor.

Heels also help to elongate the legs and the leather tie details are a sexy take on an otherwise conservatively designed shoe.

Pair these on one wrist for a really cool effect.  (I’m totally getting these for myself as well!)

A beautiful blue pair of simple swarovski crystals will really sparkle and complement her outfit!

I really like being able to find beautiful timeless pieces of clothing, but sometimes you simply need to blow budget to the wind!  I hope you like these selections, Laura!

{December 30, 2010}   Out on the town with the family

Meet Kristin.  She’s looking for an outfit to wear out with her family and has a budget of $100.  She wants something that is casual, but appropriate for a night on the town.

We’ll want to emphasize her curves, and I’d like to add a little femininity to her boyish style.

Here is a floral dress from Forever21 that should hit a few inches above the knee.  It’s lovely and feminine but isn’t too dainty for Kristin’s style.

We’ll throw a fitted denim jacket over the dress to avoid being too girly and add a little interest to the florals on the dress.

A great pair of tights really brings an outfit together this season.  The color has a similar tone to the dress and jacket but will not detract from the loveliness of the dress.

Add a pair of shoes the same color as the tights and you’ll create a long legged effect that will make you look thinner and more feminine.

We’ve got a few bucks leftover, so we’ll throw in this really cute cuff bracelet.  It’s polished, flirty, and just too cute to pass up!

All together, this look cost exactly $99.48!  A denim jacket over a floral dress, with opaque tights, matching heels, and a flirty cuff is trendy and perfect for a night out with the family or a Sunday brunch with the in-laws.

{December 19, 2010}   I love my skin!

I’ve decided to talk about skin as well as fashion in my blog.  Thanks to PCOS and other health issues, my skin tries to rebel and have a mind of it’s own.  This is unacceptable to me.  It’s my body and should do as I say, darn it!  It’s taken me years to find the products that work for my skins needs and not react badly to my rebellious, sensitive, needy skin.  Now that I’ve finally conquered acne, I’ve got the threat of impending wrinkles to worry about.

Thanks to my lack of sunscreen while growing up in a rural part of Arizona, I’ve had years of damage (plus acne) to undo!  It wasn’t until I turned 24 and found my first wrinkle that I realized, it’s the only skin I’ve got!  I have to take good care of it because I won’t get a second chance at treating it right.

How did I choose my skin care regimen, you may ask?  It took a while to get it right just to fight the acne.  I can now proudly say it is no longer an issue when I stick to my regimen, in spite of my PCOS.

First, I searched until I felt a cleanser that worked with my skin’s ph levels.  It should feel firm, but not tight, and should be able to cleanse deeply enough for your needs.  If you wear makeup, it must clean deeply to remove the makeup.  Your skin should have a clean feeling, but no red splotchiness or irritation.  Once you’ve found your cleanser, stick with it!  It’ll take a few weeks for your skin to get used to it, so use each one for at least a month unless it causes irritation.  If you’ve found something that works, don’t be tempted to change it no matter how much your friend loves her new cleanser.  Her skin is different from yours, so don’t expect the same results.

Next, pick a moisturizer.  If your skin is dry, you’ll want something creamy.  If it’s sensitive, try a gel moisturizer.  Either way, make sure it feels like your skin can “breath”.  You’ll know that it’s working for you if there’s no irritation and after a month it feels natural on your skin and doesn’t clog your pores.

You can choose a moisturizer with sunscreen already in it, or you can choose a separate sunscreen product.  This is one I’m still working on finding a good oil free sunscreen for sensitive skin, have recommendations?  Let me know!

One trick for anti-aging is exfoliation.  I’ve recently discovered that it’s more economical and easier to just add epsom salts to my cleanser or body wash.  It’s just as effective and will last a long time, and is less likely to mess with skin’s ph levels.  Exfoliating is important for keeping skin appearing youthful and luminous!

There are other things you can do to keep your skin healthy and beautiful!  I’ll keep you updated on my discoveries as I think of them, and as always, feel free to contact me with yours as well!

Oh noez! A wrinkle! Do you see it?! It's right *there*!!!

{December 19, 2010}   New Years Eve Party

This is Sonja!  She’s looking for a dress to wear to a New Years Eve party at her friends house.  There will be beer, games, and all sorts of fun!  She already has plenty of makeup and accessories, so our budget of $80 should get us pretty far!

Sonja is a tall woman, so the empire waist will show off all the right curves while elongating her legs and making her appear thinner.  This dress plays up the bust line just right and will work to hide the tummy.

The print on the dress already provides a statement, so we wanted the shoes to be quietly interesting.  Paired with a pair of black tights, they will add a sophisticated look to this, and nearly any dress this season.

Wear these black tights for a long legged look.

Add a pair of silver chandelier earrings, chunky ring, and bangles, and you’ll have a nicely casual outfit for a fun New Years party!

To turn this into a work outfit, throw on a black blazer and a strand of pearls.

For hair, I picture something like this:

You’ll want some sparkly metallic eyeshadow, and nude pink lips to round out your look for the evening.

All together, this look cost a total of $88, about $8 over budget!  (I believe she already owns a pair of black tights, if so, then we’re right on budget!)

Hope this helps!  Enjoy your night!

{December 12, 2010}   Nights out on the town

Anthony is looking for an outfit to wear out on the town with his sweetie.  He has a sturdy build, so will want a tailored straight leg pant, button down shirt, and blazer.  The budget for this outfit is $80, but hopefully we can make it stretch with flexible timeless pieces that can be worn for other occasions.

The piece I decided to build the outfit around is this cardigan from Forever21 men’s section.  The panels on the shoulders will emphasize his broad shoulder frame while minimizing his waist.

Wear it over this shirt from Old Navy.  A solid colored tailored shirt will always looked polished with a men’s cardigan or blazer and works for many occasions!

These pants on sale from JcPenney pull the outfit together and can be worn for all occasions!  I’ve chosen them in black so they will work with most outfits.

If your desire is for a more formal setting then throw on this tie I found from tiehot on etsy!  The red will tie in with the button down from Old Navy and the blue contrasts just enough to add some character.

If your looking for something a little more casual, then layer the cardigan and button down shirt with a black tee that matches the pants.  Here is an inexpensive tee I’ve found from Forever21.

Hope you like these selections Anthony!  The key pieces are tailored just right for your frame and I hope they will complement your personal style!  I’ve brought this outfit together for a total of $73.78!  Perfectly within your budget!  Good luck on your date!

{January 28, 2010}   In the Beginning…

Anniversary Outfit

This is Crystal!  She’s looking for a nice outfit to wear for her Wedding Anniversary within a $60-$70 price range.

Judging by other photos you’ve shown me, you seem to favor earthy tones, which really work for you.  I would suggest this dress.  The waist sits at the base of the ribs, which accentuates the smallest part of the torso making you look longer and leaner.

Pair it with this pendant from Forever21.  The dress is modern and sophisticated, but this pendant will bring a vintage flair and add more character to the look.

*Note:  The higher the heel, the leaner it makes your legs appear!  I would throw on a pair of black or brown pumps with this outfit.  To be a little more daring, try a pair of metallic flats like these:

We have about $10 left to our budget so I’ve chosen a few inexpensive items to help accentuate your lips, eyes, and cheeks.

For eyecolor I’ve chosen E.L.F Brightening Eyecolor in Nouveau Neutrals.

E.L.f. Essentials Regular and Waterproof Mascara duo in black

And E.L.F. Brightening Eyeliner in Midnight

I’ve chosen e.l.f. Mineral Blush in Peachy Coral.

Since we’re going neutral for the eyes, let’s be a little bold on the lips with e.l.f. Essentials Lipstick in Gypsy.

There you have it!  A sophisticated evening dress, a vintage-looking pendant, and inexpensive cosmetic choices all for just over $68!
